My Collection: (Maybe) I'm Just Not That Into Quilts
Share
I hate to admit it: I have never been very into quilts. It's not that I don't appreciate the work, the community, the history...it's just been an aesthetic that never particularly appealed to me. And, I grew up in the farmlands of the midwest where every home's interior was decorated to the hilt in, well: "farmhouse interior" ---so I come by this predisposition honestly.
Well, maybe that's changed. Particularly since I just inherited a pile of very old, very beautiful and
very embroidered family quilts:
Hazel was my grandmother. You can meet her here!
All of the quilts are entirely hand-stitched. Meaning all of those tiny stitches you see (the "quilting") were sewn by hand. If you look closely, you can see the pencil marks made as the pattern.
The oldest quilt given to me is dated from 1840. EIGHTEEN FORTY, people. The proudly and gloriously quilted signature (shown above, third image), appears on that one. Okay, I'll admit it. I'm starting to love quilts.
Oh, and what about that goofy mystery animal on my father's baby quilt from 1935? What do you think that is? A cat? A fox? A goomus? I think it's a goomus.

Beautiful! What lovely family treasures! Ive never found the aesthetic of basic quilts appealing either, but if I were blessed with heirlooms as you were I’d find a new appreciation too. What does the white quilt read? Thanks for sharing!
Firstly, I love the bird and flower quilt. Gorgeous.
Secondly, the animal on the quilt, reminds me of Where The Wild Things are, but the quilt I’m sure pre-dates the book….interesting.
