Earlier this year, luxury denim brand Citizens of Humanity invited me to design a special collection of embroidered denim exclusively for Free People. Why? How? Well...
You may remember that I went to Tokyo last year with a similar collaboration for Agolde (which is a part of Citizens). That project was such a fantastic and rare experience (please, I beg you to go read about it here) I simply couldn't say no to this new proposal.
Citizens of Humanity is a rare company. They make all of their clothing in Los Angeles and they partner frequently with artists and independent designers to make a little magic. I've loved working with them.
So, the work began. I began designing an embroidered collection based on my artwork and drawings with the embroidery team at Citizens:

No, I hadn't done anything quite like this before. This took weeks and weeks of work. We knew it wasn't possible to embroider all the clothes by hand, so how could they make them look as hand embroidered as possible?
I'll admit it: I was a little dubious about how well it could be done. And it took numerous meetings and samples and re-workings to get it just right.
So how did it all turn out? Have a look!

The "Desert Aura" collection is inspired by the mystique of the desert and the magic that seems to surround plant life found there.
It's my hope the clothes will continue to be embellished and stitched by the wearer to personalize the pieces and make them truly unique!
But what I am admittedly the most excited about is the limited edition,
Sublime / Citizens / Free People Bandana Embroidery Kit to accompany the collection:

My "Eye In The Sky" design is laser engraved onto a soft chambray bandana for you to embroider. I think this may the first laser-created embroidery design! I had the idea when touring their immaculate and beautiful factory (all of the clothes from Citizens of Humanity are made in Los Angeles). When they showed me how they used a laser to distress denim and add embellishement, I knew I wanted to make an embroidery kit with a beautiful Citizen's bandana a part of the collection.
The bandana embroidery kit also comes with 14 skeins of Sublime Floss, an embroidery hoop, needles and my full-color instruction book, Three Simple Stitches.

I am having serious flashbacks of all the stuff I embroidered on my jeans and everyone else’s jeans in the ‘70s… looking forward to the kit.
